Sara R. Selim
Theatre & Opera Director, Scholar and Translator
About me
I am a theatre and opera director, scholar, and translator.
My work sits at the intersection of artistic performance, political activism and social justice exploring how performance can give voice to and help us reflect upon the urgent issues of our time.

Theatre

Theatre as a space for justice, relationality, and transformation.
My work moves between contemporary theatre and new writing.
A central part of my practice involves researching, translating, and staging plays by playwrights whose work has rarely been produced on European stages, with a particular focus on texts that engage with social injustice, colonial histories, and structures of power. I am especially interested in works that foreground the experiences and voices of women, exploring histories and contemporary forms of gendered oppression, as well as feminist and decolonial perspectives.
Through both research and performance, I seek to bring these voices into dialogue with European audiences, contributing to a broader and more inclusive theatrical repertoire. My work approaches theatre not only as an artistic practice, but as a space where alternative forms of knowledge, relationality, and resistance can emerge.
Research & Writing
My work also develops through research on theatre, law, and social justice, alongside translation and academic writing.

“For people who have refused to disappear in spite of hundreds of years of occupation, refused to be assimilated in spite of an active policy to take away their languages, traditional lands, and cultural practices, the telling of these stories and speaking of these languages in public is a political act, an act of resistance”
